Best Execution as a Service (BEaaS)

Best Execution is often treated as a reporting exercise, focused on meeting thresholds or explaining individual outliers. In practice, it is a continuous process that sits at the intersection of trading judgement, data, governance and oversight. When any one of those elements is weak, firms can struggle to evidence outcomes or demonstrate effective control.

A Best Execution review looks beyond individual trades to assess how the overall framework operates in practice. This includes policies and procedures, the quality of management information, the effectiveness of challenge between the first and second lines of defence, and the way issues are identified, documented and addressed over time. The objective is not to re-run execution analysis, but to understand whether the operating model consistently supports good client outcomes.

Well-run reviews recognise that Best Execution is contextual. Market structure, liquidity conditions, order size, strategy choice and asset class all matter. Static benchmarks or generic thresholds can obscure genuine insight, while excessive focus on isolated exceptions can crowd out more meaningful discussion around trends, behaviours and systemic improvement.

Ergo Consultancy approaches Best Execution reviews as an operating system rather than a single metric. Through its Best Execution as a Service (BEaaS) framework, Ergo helps firms assess and strengthen the full lifecycle of Best Execution, from dealer processes and evidence standards through to committee governance and Risk Committee reporting. The focus is on clarity of roles, proportionate challenge, robust documentation and management information that supports learning as well as oversight.

As part of this, Ergo can attend and run Best Execution Committee meetings, helping to set the agenda, structure discussion and ensure appropriate challenge and follow-through. This provides experienced, independent oversight and materially de-risks senior managers with SMCR responsibility for Best Execution, while allowing trading and compliance teams to focus on delivery within a well-defined and defensible governance framework
